UAE schools crowned with the British Council International School Award
UAE schools crowned with the British Council International School Award

27th June 2013, Abu Dhabi, UAE  :  Nad Al Hamar School in Dubai, Al Asayel School in Abu Dhabi and Al Seddique School in Al Gharbia are now the proud owners of the British Council's International School Award.  The Award recognises the work done by these schools to ‘bring the world into the classroom.'

His Excellency Ali Mehad Al Suwaidi, Acting Undersecretary, Ministry of Education and Ms Alison Markwick, Director, British Council, Dubai handed over the trophy and International School Award and certificate to Mrs Fatema AbdelMalek, Principal of Nad Al Hamar School at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Education in Dubai on the 26th of June. Mr Mohammed Al Khumairi, Director of Specialised Schools, Ministry of Education was also present at the ceremony.

Mr Pat Heenan, Lead Cluster Manager, Abu Dhabi Education Council and Mr Gordon Slaven, Director, British Council, UAE presented the International School Awards and certificates to the Principals and teachers of Al Asayel School and Al Seddique School at a ceremony which was held at the ADEC Regional Office on the 27th of   June.

Gordon Slaven, Director, British Council, UAE said, ‘Many congratulations to all the schools who have been successful in gaining the International School Award. The award is a recognition of all their hard work in ensuring that there is an international element to teaching and learning in schools here in the UAE. I hope that more schools in the UAE will take up the opportunity for achieving the International School Award, to demonstrate their commitment to internationalising their curriculum, through a recognised set of achievements, policies, and curriculum content.

‘With employers demanding the soft skills needed to operate in an international workplace, it is vital for their success that all young people are equipped with a better understanding of  their place in the world and of other cultures.”

The International School Award (ISA) is a global accreditation scheme recognising good practice in incorporating the international dimension into schools. The Award acknowledges school collaboration internationally and provides a framework for recognising schools that:

  • champion international work and collaboration with partners to build and develop lasting relationships
  • benchmark best practice and share professional development in teaching and learning
  • engage young people in both the global economy and global citizenship and develop their skills for life and work
  • support whole-school projects that contribute towards school improvement
  • enrich education through international work.

Mrs Zahra Hashim, Deputy Director, Specialized Public Schools Department, Ministry of Education said, ‘I am extremely pleased that one of our Madares Al Ghad schools, Nad Al Hamar School has been accredited with the British Council's International School Award. Having been a jury member of the ISA previously, I can say that this Award provides a framework for schools to embed internationalism across all curriculum subjects and all year groups, thereby enriching the entire curriculum of the school and thus creating students who are globally aware and prepared for life and work in a global society. My best wishes to the newly accredited schools.'

The ISA was launched in the UAE three years ago and so far eight schools from UAE have been accredited with the Award. The Award was initially open to only the Connecting Classrooms schools in the country. The good news is that the Award is now open to all schools in the country irrespective of curriculum followed and cycles.

Ms Sara Bader Al Qubaisi, Principal, Al Asayel School said, “I am really proud that Al Asayel School has been accredited with the International School Award. Our students participated in eight international activities through the International School Award. These activities demonstrated the international dimension of their creativity and display the advanced level in which Abu Dhabi Education Council seeks permanent and continuous development at all levels. I believe that this global accreditation will push my teachers and students forward and open the windows to them to be involved in the world's wide experiences.”

2012/13 has seen more than 900 schools receive the International School Award accreditation. This includes a wide range of schools from a variety of different backgrounds and geographical areas across the globe.   The Award is now available worldwide in 19 countries including India, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Around 17,000 International School Awards have been presented to successful schools around the world since the scheme began in 1999.
