First UAE Free Zone to Win Distinction
Dubai-UAE: 26 June, 2013 - Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), the integrated free zone technology park, has become the first free zone in the UAE to receive the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) Standard Corporate Certification.
Dr. Mohammed Al Zarooni, Vice Chairman and CEO, Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority, received the certification from Rebecca Fox, General Manager, CIPS MENA, in the presence of a number of senior officials from DSO.
The certification, which acknowledges the seamless operation of the free zone's logistics department, is valid for three years and recognises DSO's procurement and supply policies, strategy, procedures and processes that were assessed against CIPS benchmarks for leadership and organization, personnel, process and systems, as well as strategy, performance measurement and management.
Abdul Baset Al Bastaki, Vice President - Logistics and Contracts at Dubai Silicon Oasis, said: “The CIPS award is a prestigious recognition that strengthens our credibility among our stakeholders. The certification reflects our ongoing efforts to shape DSO into a world-class destination that facilitates leading and emerging brands to establish their Middle East & Africa base and achieve their business goals. Receiving the accreditation is undoubtedly the outcome of our team's dedication to delivering excellence and will further motivate us to raise our performance standards.”
The CIPS Corporate Certification will help drive DSO's long-term strategic plan through providing a progressive pathway to international-standard procurement and supply excellence. In addition to facilitating the integration of efficient, effective and economic business processes, the recognition will strengthen the free zone's risk identification, management, and mitigation capabilities. Offering opportunities to build stronger stakeholder relationships, the certification equips DSO with a competitive edge over its peers.
Rebecca Fox, General Manager, CIPS MENA, said: “Supply chain management is integral to the UAE economy, which serves as a hub for the Middle East and Africa region for several multinationals. Through gaining the certification, DSO's logistics department has proved that the free zone is aptly prepared to provide clients with global standard services. As a professional body, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply helps corporates establish the right policies, strategies, procedures and processes. Moving forward, we encourage DSO to work towards the next objective in its quest for excellence, which is the Corporate Certification Advanced Standard.”
CIPS is a not for profit, professional body headquartered in the UK with more than 66,000 members worldwide. The global body has had a presence in the Middle East and North Africa for over three years from its regional headquarters in Dubai. In addition to helping individuals and organizations achieve procurement & supply excellence through various programmes, CIPS offers a range of products and services to equip customers with the knowledge, training, and practical skills needed to derive maximum benefit and value from procurement practices.
To further help and continue the success of global best practices, CIPS conducts workshops for members that have gained the ‘standard' certification to identify areas where improvements can be made. A maturity profile is used to assess organizations to obtain the subsequent levels of success: silver – leading processes; gold – advanced processes, and platinum – world class processes.
Wholly-owned by the government of Dubai, DSO operates as a free zone for companies producing semiconductors, microelectronics, and other high-tech products. The park has also emerged as a destination of choice for industry players seeking to establish their regional headquarters and centres of research and development in the Middle East and Africa.
