Horizon school children, parents and teachers took time out of their busy schedules to personally deliver shoe boxes to the Sonapur labour camp.
For the past three weeks Horizon School have been collecting shoe boxes, the target was to collect 300 which was surpassed meaning every single man at the camp received a box that had been individually decorated by a child. Each box comprised of disposable razor/blades, shaving foam, soap, deodorant, shampoo, face cloth, talcum powder, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, nail clippers, 25 AED phone voucher. All contents of the boxes were the same so as to avoid any disputes.
At the camp children were accompanied by their parents and teachers and they had prepared a medley of songs, they sang solo and in groups, they read poetry that they had written themselves and parents sang in the native language of the labourers. The men very much appreciated seeing the children because there are some men who have not see their new born babies and there are others who have not seen their family for over 3 years and they said for them to see their children in our children is something more valuable than anything. The children touched their hearts by singing to them. The area is referred to as ‘Sonapur' which literally means ‘City of Gold' in Hindi by expatriate labourers. In stark reality Sonapur is a rubble-strewn patchwork of miles and miles of identical concrete buildings. The men who live there miss their homeland at this time of the year. The children have completely capture the essence of Horizon School vision - The independent learner with skills and attributes to manage oneself, relationships with others and to contribute to the community both local and global. For the past three years Horizon School have collected and delivered food and shoe boxes to the men at the camp and it has been extremely successful!
In December 2012 Atkins Global joined an initiative set up by Horizon School for schools and businesses across Dubai UAE. The aim simply was to give back to our community by supporting theArticle continues below construction workers here in the UAE. This was fully supported by the Head Teacher Ms Sinclair. Horizon School and Atkins Global collected a total of AE8690! The idea was to buy each man a present and this was made achievable by the generous giving from both parties! There are 300 men in the camp and it was possible to buy each of the men a jacket with the proceeds. Colleagues from Atkins Global, parents and teachers from Horizon School joined for the collection of the jackets and delivered them personally to the ‘Sonapur camp'. The jackets were handed out and it was soon realised that there weren't enough jackets for each of the men, so the men that came every week to the hall gave theirs to their guests as a gift. There were a total of 320 men and so more jackets were purchased so that every person received a gift.
It is our aim to bless the men who have built all the beautiful towers and buildings and who have created this wonderful city that we now live and work in on a daily basis Dubai UAE!
