Bad Breath, or Halitosis, is one of those things that besets us all from time to time, especially first thing in the morning. If you are a chronic sufferer it is unlikely that anyone other than your dentist will actually tell you about the problem, although you may notice friends and colleagues starting to give you a wide berth!
Dr Jaco Smith at The Dental Studio offers his advice on how to spot your own bad breath and suggests remedies to keep it in check.
Dr Jaco says the easiest way to test for bad breath is to lick your wrist, let the saliva dry for about 20 seconds and then smell it. If there is an odour, then you have a problem. But what causes it and what can be done about it?
Dr Jaco explains, “Most people think bad breath comes from the intestines, but in fact 95% of halitosis is caused by “bad” bacteria in the mouth, particularly on and under the tongue and at the back of the mouth. He continues, “It also comes from trapped foods in cavities and between the teeth which, as they rot, emit that unpleasant sulphuric odour.”
There are also occasions when certain foods – such as garlic and spices, or smoking can cause bad breath as the mouth dries out.
Dr Jaco says the most important investment you can make in addition to a good toothbrush, regular brushing and flossing is a tongue scraper. Try scraping the tongue at least twice a day, from the back of the mouth to the front, and rinse thoroughly afterwards. Initially you may feel a gagging sensation but this passes with practice.
Most mouthwashes contain alcohol which dries out the mouth and reduces saliva. This in turn exacerbates bad breath. To keep your mouth fresh throughout the day, keep the mouth moist by drinking plenty of water, chew sugar-free gum (sugar encourages bad bacteria), and eat plenty of crunchy fruit and vegetables that stimulate saliva production.
Together with regular twice yearly dental check-ups and visits to the hygienist, this should keep bad breath at bay and bring back your friends! If the problem is more severe, your dentist will give you individual advice.
