Oman's ITA Teams Up With SAP To Boost Graduate Employment Prospects

Collaboration To Support Innovative Mawared Training Programme; SAP Sponsors 20 Talented Omani Graduates To Gain Vital ICT And Business Skills

MUSCAT, Oman — June 17, 2013 — SAP, the world's largest business software company, has revealed details of its innovative Mawared graduate training program in Oman.
SAP also announced that it is collaborating with Oman's Information Technology Authority (ITA) on plans to improve the programme's effectiveness across the country, including the potential to subsidise students.

The Mawared program is currently educating 20 talented Omani graduates, who were selected from a pool of over 300 applicants. A further 20 students are set to join in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Current Mawared students are well on their way to gain essential business, IT and leadership skills. As a part of the program, they recently took part in networking and knowledge-sharing session with local businesses and industry heads in Muscat. The event was spearheaded by Fahad bin Sultan Al Abri, Director General of the Digital Society Development Division, ITA, and Marita Mitschein, Senior Vice-President Strategic Investments, SAP AG, and Managing Director, SAP Training & Development Institute. Also in attendance was His Excellency Hans-Christian Freiherr von Reibnitz, German Ambassador to Oman.

Moving forward, Mawared students could be funded by organisations such as the ITA and the private sector, which will benefit from access to a peerless pool of technologically articulate, business-savvy consultants attuned to local market needs.

Training will include hands-on project experience and encompass everything from negotiation and communication to conflict management and “design thinking”. In addition, the initiative will offer SAP certifications to associate level in core business and industry solutions.

Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Company (ORPIC) have already benefited from a pilot version of the programme.

“ITA is proud to work with SAP on the Mawared programme,” said Dr. Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi
Chief Executive Officer, ITA.

“Information and communication technology is a critical part of the Oman 2020 economic vision, and a powerful catalyst for economic diversification, entrepreneurialism and, ultimately, a more sustainable, knowledge-based society. We know Oman has the talent to shape a bright future, but we must always ensure they have access to world-class education and training. SAP, with its global track record for capacity-building and business innovation, is an ideal ally in our mission to unlock the potential of graduates, and put them on the path to attain influential, industry and economy-shaping leadership positions.”

Mawared engages students from the region's top universities, and the rigorous selection process ensures only the brightest and most capable are recruited.

The program, which is central to SAP's plans to certify more than 2,000 new consultants in the region within 2015, is a direct response to a distinct skills gap in the market and a lack of opportunities for talented young graduates.

“The collaboration with ITA is a welcome boost to the Mawared programme, and will markedly enhance our ability to produce graduates that can genuinely make a difference across multiple industries. Youth are the protagonists of Oman's future economic success story, and we are proud to do everything we can to support their development,” said Gergi Abboud, Managing Director, SAP Gulf.

Marita Mitschein, Senior Vice-President Strategic Investments, SAP AG, and Managing Director, SAP Training & Development Institute, added:

“Mawared has everything in place to succeed, and we now look forward to the next step where it runs as a sustainable model, funded by government entities and private sector companies keen to gain access to top talent that cannot be found anywhere else.”
