The panel discussion was supported by several of Dubai's leading journalists & media experts
World Media Academy, Dubai (WMA) hosted a debate yesterday (15th June 2013), which explored themes relating to the ‘The Future of Media'. The event was designed to highlight and explore some of the industry's most prominent trends, and to educate those thinking of entering various communication professions, including journalism and new media, both regionally and internationally.
The panel featured a broad range of professional journalists from print, radio and TV as well as a social media expert, representing the broad spectrum of today's media landscape. Panel guests included Austyn Allison from MEED magazine, Miriam Farshoukh from Microsoft Gulf and Muhammad Aldalou from MediaQuest.
The group discussed a number of key issues such as the relationship between citizen based journalism and professional journalism, the future of print, and the impact of social media. Audience members, who included some of WMA's current students and others interested in pursuing a career in journalism and new media were able to interact with the panel and pose questions.
Michael Shagoury, Director of WMA Dubai said: ‘'Events such as this are an important way of educating people about the realities of the media industry. One of the major things we focus on for our students is the importance of becoming proficient across a number of different platforms. In today's world it is not enough for journalists or communication professionals to rely on one area, such as print or radio, they will be required to understand and maximise a wide number of channels. Our job is to teach individuals how they can find their own voice and communicate to the world in the most effective way, on the issues that matter most over a variety of platforms.''
Social media expert and panel member Miriam Farshoukh, Microsoft Gulf added, ‘'in a relatively short period of time, we have witnessed social media change the way that individuals interact with each other and the way that businesses interact with their audience. The latest technologies, proliferation of sources and channels, and changes in consumption habits have influenced how the industry creates, distributes and turns content into profit. With 88% of the Middle East and Africa region's online users using social media daily, this represents a significant shift in how they consume news and rely on traditional media. The industry's challenge is to find the right business models to ensure creative, high-quality content while still embracing the disruptive nature of participatory media.''
Audience member Rahul Karamchandani commented: ‘'this was a great opportunity to learn from the first-hand experiences of people within the media industry and to understand some of the challenges they face, as well as the speed at which the regional media sector is continuing to develop.''
WMA Dubai offers a post-graduate diploma in Digital Communication, Journalism and PR during which students will receive hands on training in the mediums of print, radio, photography, television, new media, and PR. The organisation is a joint initiative of EMDI & Greycells Education Ltd.
