Abu Dhabi-UAE: 5 June, 2013 - The Centre of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi organized a series of environmental activities for employees and stakeholders to mark the World Environment Day. The center's multi-pronged efforts spotlighted the urgency of protecting the environment and drew the active participation of institutions and individuals across the emirate.
The initiatives included displaying awareness tips on the screen of landline phones and desktops, and appointing two mascots at the center's reception area to represent good and bad environmental behaviour to educate employees on ways to deal with food and food waste. The mascots particularly underlined the importance of waste segregation at the home and office, and the need to avoid mixing food leftovers with recyclable waste. The efforts also included making waste bins from fabric at the center's offices. In addition, interactive competitions were held and gifts given away to select employees for their efforts in maintaining a clean environment.
Commenting on the initiative, Dr Salem Al Kaabi, acting General Manager, Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi, said: “The center relentlessly prioritizes the protection of the environment through highlighting our mission of maintaining safe and sound surroundings. This is a common mandate for all society members, and requires the concerted engagement of each one of us if we are to raise the level of environment education across all segments of the society.”
In the run to the World Environment Day today, the center hosted a talk for environment ambassadors on the reduction and reuse of waste. An awareness trip was also conducted to a waste recycling site. In addition, two staff members were nominated to evaluate sustainable schools in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, the center attended the World Environment Day events hosted by Dulsco in conjunction with the Cambridge International College.
Engineer Hani Hosni, Head of EHS Sector, Center of Waste Management - Abu Dhabi, said: “Our participation in the World Environment Day reflects our commitment to raising awareness about waste segregation at source and the reduction of food waste in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. Our consistent endeavor aim to improve the quality of life and the environment for the community at large.”
Khaleed Al Bloushi, acting head of communication and public Awareness department at Centre of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi, said: “We are exceptionally proud of the manner in which our employees and members of the community came together to make our activities a success. We are particularly thankful to government entities such as the Farmer's Centre and the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority for allowing us to distribute awareness materials and host competitions and awards at their offices. In addition, we set up a special pavilion at an exhibition organized by Al Hosn Gas on waste reuse and provided colored bins to highlight the importance of waste segregation at source.'
The Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi focuses on the promotion of best practices in waste management, including reuse, recycling and waste segregation at source. The center continuously runs educational and awareness initiatives for Abu Dhabi citizens and community in line with the objectives of Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030.
