From 200 pounds to 100 races, Luis Alvarez strives to become ultimate Ironman
Dubai – June 2nd, 2013 – Luis Alvarez, a long-time Timex Multisport Team athlete, announced his goal to complete his 100th Ironman at the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii on October 13th, 2013.
An inspirational figure for both professional and aspiring athletes around the world, Luis began his transformation from a 200-pound smoker to an Ironman at the age of 24. His life-changing journey began when he failed to complete a 5k race walking and vowed to improve his health. Since then, he has travelled the world to compete in Ironman triathlons and spread his motivational message. In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Luis, a native of Mexico, is also recognized for his successful business career, as he was named CEO of BT Global Services division in 2012.
Having completed 92 Ironman events to-date, Alvarez is scheduled to participate in 13 Ironman competitions in 2013, including 8 140.3 races. As Luis approaches the final stages of this historic milestone, he will enlist the help of his son, who will join his father at Kona and will be competing in his first Ironman.
“This has been an exhilarating, humbling and unexpected journey, and I am proud to share my story with so many incredible athletes and everyday people who want to change their lives for the better,” said Alvarez. “I look forward to celebrating with my fellow Timex Multisport athletes in Kona and to setting an example to the next generation of athletes, beginning with my son, Jose Manuel.”
Luis has been a member of the Timex Multisport Team, The Timex Multisport Team is the oldest active and most prestigious triathlon team in the world and includes an accomplished mix of dynamic professionals and well-rounded amateurs who embody the sacrifice, commitment and passion of the sport.
“Luis represents the very best of the Timex Multisport team, as he reminds us of the transformative powers of racing competitions, as well as our personal pursuits of change,” said Bart van Schijndel Timex International Sport Marketing Manager. “He is an inspiration to all of us, and we look forward to joining him and Jose Manuel at the finish line in Kona.” Alvarez is currently recovering from a disc issue in his back, and had to miss his 93rd IRONMAN in Lanzarote. We look forward to getting him back to the IRONMAN race circuit soon.
