Al Jalila Foundation announces Governance Structure built around Ethics, Transparency and Expert Input

Three committees will harness the expertise of scientific experts and respected community leaders

UAE, Dubai,  May 2013: Al Jalila Foundation has announced key strategic committees to support its existing governance structure in its strong commitment to operate the not-for-profit organisation on par with international best practice to become a global pacesetter.

To ensure the highest standards in the three pillars of medical treatment, education and research, a Scientific Advisory Committee comprising renowned experts has been created. It is chaired by internationally respected Professor Sehamuddin Galadari, who brings extensive experience amassed at United Arab Emirates University, Emirates Foundation, Dubai Harvard Foundation for Medical Research, the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences and numerous other positions in the UAE, UK, US and South Korea.

In line with the Foundation's commitment to transparency and accountability, the management of the endowment and disbursement of funding will be overseen by a Fund Management Committee chaired by Her Excellency Raja Easa Al Gurg, member of the Board of Trustees and Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Al Jalila Foundation. Amjid Javaid, governance and compliance expert, will head the Audit, Risk & Compliance Committee, with global firm Deloitte as the Foundation's external auditors.

His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of Al Jalila Foundation, explained: “The UAE epitomises the principles of integrity, prudence and collective input, therefore our Foundation strives to emulate these principles of responsible governance. We will utilise the experience of acclaimed experts whose areas of expertise range from the scientific, academic, financial, administrative, philanthropic and other fields. We are committed to cultivating a culture of transparency and accountability to ensure stakeholder confidence in everything we do.”

Reiterating the Foundation's commitment to transparency, Her Excellency Raja Easa Al Gurg, commented: “Our status as a not-for-profit organisation makes us deeply accountable to our donors, prospective beneficiaries and the various stakeholders with whom we collaborate. This makes it imperative for us to uphold unimpeachable ethics and the highest standards of governance, so that our integrity can reassure potential partners in the UAE and beyond.”

Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Al Olama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, added that the committees will not merely play a monitoring role but also an advisory role: “As any scientific researcher will testify, it is absolutely crucial to have an unbiased and balanced perspective. The experts' guidance will give us the reassurance to excel in our operations, knowing that we are anchored in sound governance and principles.”

Al Jalila Foundation was established by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to position Dubai at the forefront of medical innovation. The Foundation is committed to operating within the highest ethical principles and standards to protect the interests of all stakeholders and ensure long-term sustainability.
