Inauguration of the Dubai Tobacco-Free Art Exhibition for Educational Institutions
 

United Arab Emirates, Dubai, May 7, 2013: Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, the Dubai Tobacco-Free Art Exhibition was recently inaugurated at the Higher Colleges of Technology for Dubai's students.

Attending the event were Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim bin Kalban, CEO of Primary Healthcare Sector at the DHA, Dr. Howard Reed, Director of the Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai, Dr. Hanan Obaid, Dubai Tobacco-Free project leader and head of community health services programs, and Mrs. Hamdah Lootah – Chairperson of the Dubai Modern Education School Board of Directors.

The exhibition will run until the 16th of May during which it will be visited by students from Dubai's private and public schools and colleges. The aim of the exhibition is to educate the youth about the health hazards of tobacco consumption.

Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim bin Kalban, CEO of Primary Healthcare Sector at the DHA expressed his gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Culture and Arts Authority for his patronage to the Dubai Tobacco Free Project and its activities. He also thanked H.E. Eng. Essa Al Hajj Al Maidoor Director-General of the DHA, the administrators of the Dubai Modern Education School, Higher Colleges of Technology, and the team behind the Dubai Tobacco-Free project, as  well as any others who participated in making this event a success,

He also highlighted that last month Al Maidoor inaugurated the activities of the Dubai Tobacco-Free project and the smoking cessation clinic at in the campus of the higher colleges of technology. The aim of this clinic is to encourage students who smoke to stub this habit.

Dr. Hanan Obaid, Dubai Tobacco-Free project leader and head of community health services programs said that this exhibition is an extension of the Dubai Tobacco-Free project aimed at all the sectors of society namely schools, universities, government and private sectors in the Emirate of Dubai. Dr. Hanan stressed that this event, and the accompanying exhibition, highlights the cooperation between the Dubai Tobacco-Free project and the educational institutions within the Emirate of Dubai. The students of the Dubai Modern Education School, Higher Colleges of Technology and Zayed University displayed their works of art under the theme “Combating Tobacco”. Various art forms including paintings, sculptures, fine arts, photographs and other forms of expression were used to depict the health hazards of tobacco use.

Mrs. Hamdah Lootah – Chairperson of the Dubai Modern Education School Board of Directors highlighted that this exhibition a result of the efforts presented by the Parents Council, teachers and students of the Dubai Modern Education School  and is aimed at tackling the menace of tobacco consumption especially among the youth. The Dubai Modern Education School adopted many projects including combating smoking in order to help its students in identifying its harmful effects and its negative effects on general health.

Dr. Howard Reed, Director of the Higher Colleges of Technology in Dubai praised the cooperation between the DHA, the Higher Colleges of Technology and educational institutions in the efforts they have undertaken to raise awareness about the harmful effects of smoking.
