Operational efficiencies and cost control needed to support Healthcare infrastructure in Middle East

Experts at Hospital Build & Infrastructure Congress to discuss steps needed to build healthcare infrastructure to support growing population

Dubai, UAE: Healthcare infrastructure in the Middle East will be one of the key topics debated at the 5th Hospital Build & Infrastructure Middle East Exhibition & Congress, taking place from 3-5 June 2013 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. One of the main challenges for patients and healthcare providers are long waiting times in the ER due to bureaucratic delays and work-flow challenges. The main focus of the congress is to learn from successful international healthcare models to further enhance the existing healthcare infrastructure within the Middle East region.

Dr Yasin Khan, CEO of Westfield Hospital, Pennsylvania, USA, will be speaking at Hospital Build & Infrastructure Middle East about ways to create high quality healthcare with lower costs.

According to Dr Khan, “The Westfield model fits very well in the Middle East where operational efficiencies are needed to control costs. With a rapidly rising population, the region's baby boomers are going to require significant healthcare resources in the future. This will not be sustainable if a move is not taken to standardise care and contain cost without compromising quality. The Westfield model can provide rapid access to care and stabilisation of the patient.”

The cost of entry into a competitive healthcare market can become prohibitive in today's economic climate, especially with the fierce competition that exists between healthcare providers. For example, the cost of building a hospital in the United Stated, on average, is $1-1.5 million per bed. At Westfield Hospital, this cost is just $495,000 per bed.

“We were able to achieve this by attending to detail in the construction phase, better negotiations, and reduced cost of major equipment. All in all, we have created an efficient, high quality, low cost medical facility; a model which can easily be duplicated,” says Dr Khan.

Also speaking at Hospital Build & Infrastructure Middle East is Dr Nipit Piravej, CEO, World Medical Center, Bangkok, Thailand.

“High quality healthcare is always a critical success factor for hospitals. This includes a well-designed facility that complies with new standards, multidisciplinary health teams, latest medical technologies, as well as the supporting systems and the operating processes involved. The key point is always about quality of care and service, and sensitivity to patients' expectations. Nowadays, standardisation is not enough. A customised touch is always necessary to ensure better satisfaction.”

Hospital Build & Infrastructure Middle East is organised by Informa Life Sciences Exhibition and will bring together  investors, commissioners, backers and managers of major healthcare building projects together with planning, design, building, operations, management and refurbishment suppliers. Running alongside the exhibition is a multi-disciplinary congress consisting of four leading conferences that will focus on delivering up-to-date information which will address all the disciplines involved with the hospital build process in the Middle East.
