- 2008 – 2010 HAAD Statistics indicated that 71% of child injury deaths are caused by car accidents in Abu Dhabi.
- Appropriate use of child car restraint ( car seat and/ or seat belt) reduces incidence of death by 50 to 70 %

Al Ain 22 April, 2013: Tawam Hospital, in affiliation with Johns Hopkins Medicine, launched a child car safety campaign on April 09, 2013 to raise awareness about the safety of children in cars in the UAE. Sponsored by Baby Shop, the campaign promoted effective child safety in cars with the slogan, “Protect your child, use a child car seat and belt every time and every trip.” An educational stand was placed in the outpatients clinics building at the hospital to raise the awareness of patients and visitors on the benefits and importance of child car safety restraints and to guide parents on different types of child restraints, where to place them and how to install them.
Steven A. Matarelli, Chief Operating Officer of Tawam Hospital, said: “Safety belts in cars are designed for adults and children over 13 years of age. Children younger than 12 years must be secured by using the appropriate child car restraints that can fit the size and weight of the child. According to WHO Global status report on road safety, child restraints reduce the likelihood of a fatal crash by approximately 70 % among infants and between 54% and 80 % among young children. It is advised that children are restrained every time they ride in cars for their safety.
In Abu Dhabi and based on HAAD statistics for 2008-2010, 71% of child injuries are caused by accidents. Thousands of young children across the globe die or are injured each year in such accidents. These deaths and injuries can be avoided by using child car seats correctly while children are in vehicles.
'All passengers, whether they are children or adults, need to use the right safety seat and belt without exception. We advise parents to be a role model for their children by using seat belts always and by making them aware that seat belts are designed for their safety and protection,” added Matarelli.
Tawam Hospital is part of the SEHA Health System owned and operated by Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) which is responsible for the curative activities of all the public hospitals and clinics of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
