International District Energy Association assesses region's largest district cooling provider's environmentally friendly innovations in Dubai
Dubai, UAE; April 24, 2013: A delegation representing the US-based International District Energy Association (IDEA) last week visited the headquarters of Empower, the region's largest district cooling service provider. The delegation included IDEA's president, Rob Thornton, along with the association's chairman, Joseph BrillhartandKatrinaPielli, Senior Policy Advisor US Department of Energy. It was welcomed by Empower's CEO Ahmad Bin Shafar.
The delegation toured Empower's district cooling plant in Dubai's Healthcare City, to learn about the company's commitment to environmentally sustainable cooling solutions. The IDEA representatives also assessed the technological innovations that Empower'shas implemented in its cooling plants, such as utilising treated waste water to decrease energy usage by half. Mr. Thornton also extended an invitation for senior Empower staff to attend the 2013 annual IDEA conference, which will be held this June in Miami, Florida.
Commenting on the IDEA's visit, Ahmad Bin Shafarsaid: “Empower's association with IDEA is strong,and we are committed to sharing the latest innovation and knowledge to enhance the district cooling industry across the globe.. The ties between Empower and the IDEA will certainly benefit the district cooling companies operating in the Middle East, one of the world's most climate-sensitive regions.”
Empower, which is a joint venture between DEWA and Dubai Technology & Media Free Zone, currently operates district cooling services at several prominent developments in Dubai, including Dubai International Finance Centre, Dubai Healthcare City and Jumeirah Beach Residence.
IDEA is a nonprofit trade association founded in 1909 to facilitate the exchange of information among district energy professionals. Today, IDEA included over 1,700 members across 25 countries and is governed by an all-volunteer board of directors.
