Schneider Electric Exceeds Sustainability Targets for 2012: Planet and Society Barometer
  • Marks 6.1% Energy Savings in 2012; 200 Group Sites Connected to Struxureware, Schneider Electric's Energy Management Software Suite
  • Registers 14.8% Drop in CO2 Emissions from Transportation
  • Winner of 2012 Zayed Future Energy Prize Promotes Efficiency and Sustainability in Middle East

Dubai-UAE: 17 March, 2013 – Schneider Electric today announced it reached a score of 6.52/10 on the Planet and Society Barometer, which helps the global energy management leader to measure its sustainable development objectives for the next three years through 14 quarterly-reported indicators. During all four quarters of 2012, the Barometer demonstrated strong, steady growth, performing better than the end-of-year objective of 3.85/10. Schneider Electric is also well placed to achieve the three-year target (8/10).

Jean-Pascal Tricoire, President and CEO of Schneider Electric, said: 'The Planet and Society Barometer in Schneider Electric's Connect corporate program has tracked excellent performance since its launch in 2012. Thanks to the team's hard work, our extra-financial annual results have exceeded our objective. The progress is also reflected in our external ratings in the World and European Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the ‘Global 100 most sustainable corporations' and the Ethisphere ranking. The Barometer's performance this year gives us confidence that we will meet our three-year objective of 8/10. However, we have also observed a meteoric rise during previous versions of the Barometer (2005-2008 and 2009-2011). The biggest challenge lies in keeping it steady over three years.”

In 2012, six indicators boosted Schneider Electric's performance:
- Reduction of 14.8% in CO2 emissions in transport
- Drop of 6.1% in energy consumption
- Growth in sales made through EcoXpert partners, 7.6 points higher than that of the Group
- Presence in the three targeted ethical stock market indices
- 28% decrease in medical incidents on Schneider Electric's sites
- Proportion of women in Schneider Electric's talent pool reaching 27%

Two indicators are still being rolled out  while some are subject to volatility from one quarter to another.

A strong and recognized commitment

During 2012, Schneider Electric pursued its active contribution to advance sustainable development stakes:
- Schneider Electric was an active participant at the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development. As the main partner in the French contingent, the Group contributed to numerous discussions and conferences, concerning smart grids, mobility, and cities, access to innovation and renewable energy and energy efficiency in particular
- On this occasion, Jean-Pascal Tricoire, and Professor Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2006 and leader of Grameen, shared their vision for access to energy and agreed on the creation of the Grameen-Schneider Electric Joint Venture, which aims to expand access to clean energy in Bangladesh
- On 5 December, Schneider Electric welcomed a delegation from the International Energy Agency in Hong-Kong for a conference on energy efficiency, hosting 150 customers and partners
- In the Middle East, Schneider Electric received the Zayed Future Energy Prize 2012 and was also commended by the French President Francois Hollande in his key note address at the official inauguration of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week and World Future Energy Summit 2013 in January.

The commitments have been recognized by stakeholders. On 10, October, Schneider Electric won the CSR Innovation Award from Cercle Humania for the Planet and Society Barometer. The prize rewards the efficiency demonstrated by the Barometer in driving forward the company's sustainable development policy. 

Results by indicators category

Planet, measuring Schneider Electric's environmental performance

The progress of the Planet indicators is mainly driven by the Carbon and Energy indicators.

During 2012, transportation-related CO2 emissions decreased by 14.8%, against a three-year objective of 10% . These results mainly come from a 28% reduction in CO2 emissions for long-distance freight (air and sea). In 2012, the air freight tonnage only represented 13.3% of the total air and sea freight tonnages as against 17.9% in 2011 and 20% in 2010.

The Products and Solutions indicator is up with 65.5% of Schneider Electric's product revenue achieved with Green Premium™ offerings in 2012. A white paper on Green Premium is now available online for customers and dedicated web pages have been rolled out in each country.

The Energy indicator was calculated for the first time in Q4 2012 and achieved 6.1% of energy savings against a three-year objective of 10%, thanks to the roll-out of Schneider Electric's software applications StruxureWareTM Resource Advisor and StruxureWareTM Energy Operations on the Group's own sites. Energy savings are corrected from production and weather impact. At the end of 2012, 148 sites were connected to Energy Operations, 202 sites to Resource Advisor, and 36 sites awarded the ISO 50001 certification.

The Planet indicators point to an excellent overall performance.

The growth in sales made through Schneider Electric's EcoXperts reached its objective with 7.6 points above the Group's growth, with good results in all countries in the program: France, Spain, and Italy. The program aims to select, train and offer support to installers and other intermediaries in the sector selling solutions with environmental benefits. It is being expanded in the United States and around a dozen countries in Europe and Latin America. Initial national seminars for EcoXperts have been launched in France and Spain.

The Access to Energy indicator is still showing rapid growth, with 344,441 households connected to the grid. Schneider Electric has in particular continued to roll out its 'In-Diya' offer as well as its off-grid solar rural electrification solution 'Villasol' and its hybrid version 'Villasmart'.

Lastly, Schneider Electric's place has been confirmed in the three ethical stock market indices targeted by the Barometer, the Dow Jones Sustainability European and World indices, and the ASPI Eurozone index.

The Suppliers indicator, which was stimulated in Q4 2012, after work on the approach and measurement method, shows 7.8% of 'recommended' suppliers embraced an improvement approach in line with ISO 26000. In 2012, Schneider Electric decided to raise its ambitions regarding the indicator. From an objective of 100% of 'preferred' suppliers (several hundred - the best performers of the recommended suppliers) in line with ISO 26000, the indicator now targets 90% of the recommended suppliers (approximately 2000). Since 2011, sustainable development has become one of the seven pillars for measuring supplier performance.

People, measuring Schneider Electric's main commitments to the well-being of its employees and support to the local communities in countries where the Group operates

This year, the excellent performance of the People indicators is mostly driven by Safety and Diversity.

The Medical Incident Rate has fallen by 28% thanks to new OHSAS certifications  (at the end of 2012, 74% of industrial and logistics sites were certified), site audits, continuous training, protective measures and the drafting of Safety directives.

The Engagement indicator has slightly improved, with the Employee Engagement Index showing 55% in 2012, two points above the average for the sector. (53% - Source: Aon Hewitt)

The Diversity indicator increased dramatically at the end of the year and reached 27% women in the talent pool. Three events to be highlighted this quarter: ‘Women in Leadership' session in the United States', an in-house program that aims to develop women's leadership capabilities, the launch of the Women@Schneider community within the Group, and eight workshops on diversity in Asia aimed at managers.

The Access to Energy training program indicator also performed strongly at the end of the year, with training of 10,517 people at the Base of the Pyramid in energy sector jobs. The robust outcome is primarily due to start-up of projects in Colombia and China, and the project's significant growth in India.

The Communities indicator records 66 missions achieved with the Schneider Electric Teachers NGO since the start of the year. These promising results are in line with expectations for this program launched in February 2012, which invites current and retired Group staff to volunteer for assignments at energy management training centers supported by the Schneider Electric Foundation.
