TO AL JALILA FOUNDATION Charities join forces to improve the lives of people through medical education and research

UAE, Dubai, 14th March 2013: Al Jalila Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, established by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to support medical education and research, today announced that Easa Saleh Al Gurg (ESAG) Charity Foundation has donated 10 million dirhams towards its endowment.  HE Raja Al Gurg, Chairperson of ESAG Charity Foundation, and Dr Khalid Mohammed Al Zahed, Vice Chairperson of Board of Directors of Al Jalila Foundation, signed a partnership agreement to confirm the pledge in the presence of CEO, Dr Abdulkarrem Sultan Alolama.

Al Jalila Foundation is a local initiative, with global aspirations, that aims to be synonymous with outstanding healthcare, medical academic excellence and groundbreaking research. It will focus mainly on healthcare challenges across the Emirates to support Vision 2021 by developing pioneering ways to combat locally prevalent illnesses through cutting-edge medical research.

ESAG Charity Foundation was setup in 2010 by prominent philanthropist and business man, His Excellency Easa Saleh Al Gurg, and was declared one of the best charitable institutions by the Dubai Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department (IACAD) for its instrumental aid to various causes both within the UAE, and around the world. To date, ESAG Charity Foundation has provided significant aid towards several social, educational and humanitarian endeavours such as building educational and health centres and mosques in the UAE and Tanzania and providing pure drinking water to remote hamlets in India. It has also provided much needed aid to victims of famine in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, education support for needy students in the UAE and supporting the efforts of special need instructors and care-givers.

Al Jalila Foundation has initiated its fundraising strategy to raise 100 million dirhams in 2013, in addition to establishing a permanent endowment to ensure long-term sustainability of the foundation and its projects.  With the healthcare sector being one of the UAE's most strategic priorities Al Jalila Foundation counts on the financial support of business leaders, philanthropists and corporate organizations, as well as the community at large.

HE Raja Al Gurg, Chairperson of Easa Saleh Al Gurg Charity Foundation said: “Corporate Social Responsibility is in the DNA of our organization and we firmly believe in giving back to the community. ESAG Charity Foundation is aligned with the vision and goals of Al Jalila Foundation and we are committed to supporting their ambitions to pioneer medical innovations that will impact future generations and their quality of life.”

Dr Khalid Mohammed Al Zahed, Vice Chairperson of the Al Jalila Board of Directors said: 'We are extremely honoured to be entrusted by HE Easa Saleh Al Gurg and ESAG Charity Foundation, and we look forward to working closely with the Foundation to transform medical education and research in the region, and beyond. Private donors play a pivotal role in driving medical innovations and we are grateful for the generous support of HE Easa Saleh Al Gurg and his commitment to Al Jalila Foundation.  Today marks a milestone in our journey and, I have no doubt, that this sizeable contribution will be the catalyst that will catapult our fundraising efforts to a new level. It will go a long way to building a healthier future for our children, and our children's children.”

Acknowledging the generous donation, Dr Abdulkareem Sultan Alolama, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation, said:  “We commend HE Easa Saleh Al Gurg for his continuous philanthropic endeavours; he is a role model and his generosity will continue to impact generations to come. We are immensely grateful that HE Easa has chosen to support Al Jalila Foundation in our pursuit of medical innovation.”

Al Jalila Foundation aims to promote the UAE as a centre of excellence in the field of medical education and research and position Dubai at the forefront of medical innovation. The Foundation will facilitate medical treatment; provide academic scholarships; fund groundbreaking research; champion healthcare awareness programmes; foster strategic partnerships with local and global entities and advocate for progressive policies to ensure a sustainable future for Dubai, enhancing its global position as a medical hub.
