Rolf Sachs presents limited edition furniture and lighting pieces at PAD London, through Gabrielle Ammann // Gallery and Priveekollektie.
Gabrielle Ammann // Gallery: presenting ‘no news', ‘doppelstuhl' and ‘holzstuhl mit spion' For ‘no news', Sachs has cast a stack of newspapers in a specially developed wax, lending a timeless quality to the everyday commodity.
Elevated on an oak stand, the audience is invited to examine the finer details of the object and to contemplate the notion of time stopping still. The piece demonstrates Sachs' enjoyment of removing objects from their usual context and reinterpreting them in an experimental manner to reflect his passion for surrealism and humour.
Also on show are two limited edition pieces that take their starting point from the classic Holgen Glarus wooden chair; both ‘doppelstuhl' (2012) and ‘holzstuhl mit spion' (1993) form part of the ‘koln chair' series. First exhibited in 1994, the series reflects Sachs' playful approach and continued interest in reinterpretation.
Priveekollektie: presenting the ‘chemie collection' For the ‘chemie collection' Sachs experiments with laboratory glassware and fittings to create intriguing sculptural light pieces. Mirrored and frosted finishes are applied to the glassware to playfully transform the laboratory staples and remove them from their everyday environment. The chemicals and liquids that usually run through the glass forms are replaced by a visible flow of blue and red electrical cables that illuminate the individual vessels. The new ‘chemie No.5' table lamp and ‘chemie No.6' floor lamp will be launched exclusively at PAD London.
