Currently on view

‘Fahd Burki: Daydreams’
On view until October 9, 2022
‘Daydreams’ is Fahd Burki’s first survey exhibition, bringing together works spanning the last fifteen years of the artist’s practice. Burki’s paintings, drawings and sculptures are inspired by a wide range of influences including architecture, nature and various strands of contemporary popular culture. The selection of works range from his figurative work, through to abstraction, and a selection of commissioned reliefs. A publication featuring commissioned texts by Murtaza Vali, Saira Ansari and Dawn Ross accompanies the exhibition.

‘Taus Makhacheva: A Space of Celebration’
On view until August 14, 2022

‘A Space of Celebration’ is Taus Makhacheva’s first retrospective exhibition in West Asia, bringing together works created over the past thirteen years, including a new site-specific commission.

Makhacheva revisits and retells complex histories through a cast of characters and objects, including her alter ego, Super Taus. Her contextually grounded installations involve flawed gymnastics training arenas, Soviet-era circuses, wedding halls and suspended mountain ranges. In her works, facts meld with everyday myths, troubling the notion of cultural authenticity and making way for the fantastical.

Artist’s Rooms: Samson Young
On view until May 7, 2022

Samson Young’s Artist’s Room features a new, site-specific installation, Reasonable Music – an interactive environment consisting of (text as) sound and (text as) image. The components within this environment are derived from the processing of translating the Daoist text Daodejing. Insights from computational analysis on the text’s formal features are filtered through human intuition to generate a network of sonic and visual objects. As formal features progress along a chain of events, they are transformed, distorted, and take on new features.

The Artist’s Room is accompanied by a monograph with an essay by Orianna Cacchione, Curator of Global Contemporary Art, Smart Museum of Art, at the University of Chicago. The monograph is published by Art Jameel and is available in the Art Jameel Shop.

‘Library Circles: Salmsa Serry’
On view until August 1, 2022

In its latest iteration of Library Circles, Jameel Library presents food writer and filmmaker Salma Serry’s research, developed over the past few years, in which she explores regional menus as a site of confluence where history, knowledge, politics, economies, senses and semantics are revealed. Serry expands her research methods to include printed menus, informal publications, interviews, personal photo archives, to construct and share overlooked archival material that piece together a regional narrative.

In conjunction with ‘Library Circles: Salma Serry’, Art Jameel launches #dubaizaman, a collaborative project that asks participants to dig into their personal archives for the Kodak moments of birthdays, weddings, graduations and various jovial celebrations, expressed through what is served on the table.

To take part, submit your images through tagging @jameelartscentre and using #dubaizaman on Instagram or email Each submission should include a caption, detailing dates, names and location, if possible (90 words min.).

Every month, for the run of the display at Jameel Arts Centre, a selection will be made and shared via the Jameel’s social media channels, while the remainder joins Serry’s expansive archive.

Park Projects at Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park
Location: Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park
The inaugural Park Projects invites artists to produce works in the context of Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park. The works inhabit the public space in alternative ways, posing pertinent questions that probe notions of community, nature and the very concept of a commission.
Since October 2021, artist and pedagogue Nahla Tabbaa has been using the exterior spaces of Jameel Arts Centre as sites of experimentation. Looking at organic ecosystems and their imbrication in networks of food production, Shamsa is a series of time-based interventions using textile and organic material to observe the passage of time through the impact of the sun. Tabbaa’s commission resulted in a limited-edition artist’s book, designed by Layan Attari and available at the Art Jameel Shop.

Hong Kong artist Trevor Yeung uses botanic ecology, horticulture and installation in Volcanic Universe to occupy the Jameel Arts Centre outdoor parking lot. Connected to the park’s recycled irrigation system through repurposed sprinklers, this timed and choreographed ballet waters an otherwise unloved, man-made ground, delicately and ironically addressing notions of artificiality.
Volcanic Universe remains on view until May 2022.

Composition for a Public Park by Hassan Khan
November 2, 2019 - May 22, 2022
Location: Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park

By popular demand, artist Hassan Khan’s large-scale, multi-lingual musical artwork remains at the Jaddaf Waterfront Sculpture Park for the third year. Designed to be experienced by moving through space, it features musical scores and spoken narrative, written in three movements and composed especially for a public park. At the heart of each movement is a narration of a text written by the artist and presented in three languages: Arabic, Urdu and English.

Site-Specific Installation:
Artist’s Garden: ‘Desert is a Forest’ by Namrata Neog and Sunoj D
Location: Creekside, between galleries 2 and 3
On view until September 4, 2022

Jameel Arts Centre's Artist's Garden commission awarded to Namrata Neog and Sunoj D's 'Desert is a Forest' explores the entangled relationship between humans, animals and the flora and fauna within the UAE landscape. The plant species grown in the Artist's Garden are indigenous to the UAE and tell the story of their traditional uses as food and medicine, offering a means to explore local plant ecology and nutritional habits.
