On 12th Aug , Sharjah based youth community group 'Students for the Earth' celebrated 'International Youth Day' by making a positive difference to environment through their campaign 'Save Paper , Save Trees, Save Planet'.
'I launched this campaign aiming to spread message about saving trees by saving paper and to emphasise the need for recycling .I asked each of the 40 participants to collect and get 25kg paper each so that it will make 1000 kg. Today we have all gathered here and are going to give these 1000 kg paper to Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) for recycling. As recycling 1 ton paper saves 17 mature trees , so today we, 40 students have saved 17 trees and helped protect environment', says Arushi Madan, President of the group.
Through this campaign , group aims to inculcate the habit of saving and recycling paper and promote the importance of trees for Earth .
'Participants are very happy having collected old papers/newspapers not only from their homes but also from their neighbourhood to be able to make it 25 kg each which I had set as eligibility criteria to take them for DEWA building tour. Students put in their best efforts in getting 25 kg paper as they wanted to visit DEWA', says Madan.
After handing over 1 ton paper to EEG at Sharjah venue in a small ceremony , group went to visit DEWA -World's largest government sustainable building. To further promote sustainability and need to reduce carbon footprint , Arushi arranged a bus to take them all to DEWA, Al Quoz , Dubai so that they don't go by their own private cars which would have contributed to increase in carbon emission. The message was loud and clear that whatever you do in your daily life , do it in eco -friendly and sustainable manner.
Participant Meghana Fessy said, “ I am happy to be a part of this campaign . By collecting 25kg paper , I could contribute in a small way to save our mother earth”.
