TOMS, born in Venice, California was founded by Blake Mycoskie in 2006 when Mycoskie traveled to a village in Argentina and witnessed the hardships of children growing up without shoes to protect their feet. As a proven entrepreneur, he decided to launch TOMS, which stands for ‘Tomorrows Shoes’.
Through the simple One for One® giving model, TOMS gives away a pair of shoes to children in need for every pair purchased. TOMS signature footwear is inspired by the locally worn Argentinian, ‘alpargatas’, a comfortable and casual fabric shoe. TOMS also offers a line that are made from sustainable and vegan materials such as natural hemp, organic cotton, and recycled polyester.
Seeing that business could fuel positive impact, the company launched TOMS eyewear, in support of the visually impaired, with the same One for One ® model helps give sight to one person in need through every purchase of TOMS eyewear.
Last year TOMS gave away its 10 millionth pair of shoes. 'Within the next 18 to 24 months,' Mycoskie says, 'we expect we'll have given away 10 million more.' In addition, over 200,000 people have regained their sight through TOMS’ partnership through sight giving partners.
From humble beginnings and an aim to help just a small village with an initial shoe donation, TOMS has now helped millions of people around the world and has grown to be a globally recognized brand for both their products and inspiring initiatives.
