Ylang-Ylang, a flower known for its intensely sweet scent, grows on Mohéli, one of the smallest islands in Comoros. This archipelago's diverse population is a mixture of African, Indian and Arabian cultures.

The island's rich heritage, coveys the story of one-way crossings and long haul voyages on the Southern Seas. The climate and the light on Mohéli gives the island an exotic, escapist ambience in which visitors feel like they are at the end of the world. In the heart of this tropical Eden, surrounded by the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and the luxuriant vegetation – orchids, coconut trees, palm trees and clove trees – the ylang-ylang blooms.
 
...... Well-known for their fragrances that embodies the spirit of travel, diptyque felt compelled to pay homage to the story of this distinctive island flower. The brand matches its genuine perfumer's know-how with a nose for essences containing exotic scents. Guided by a spirit of exploration and discovery, diptyque encourages its perfumers to launch into a sensory adventure, creating a unique landscape of fragrant lands, while being open to any accidents or surprises that might enhance the quality of the raw materials.

However, do not expect to find the sunny flower here. Forget its camphor-like, slightly medicinal aspect; it's no longer simply a heady lining for jasmine or tuberose.

To compose this soliflore, the perfumer Olivier Pescheux decided to tell its most intimate story, that of a flower and its leaves. Not a flower that is simply plucked and used to announce others, but a flower with space to breathe, set in its foliage in the middle of abundant vegetation alongside other trees covered in blossom.

……… There are no touches of vanilla or orange blossom here to set off the ylang-ylang; instead the perfumer has chosen slightly crisp, green notes, between violet and blackcurrant leaf. Fresh, peppery spices, such as pink peppercorn, and woody, balsamic accords that seem to have been warmed by the sun - patchouli, vetiver, benzoin, tonka bean – have been added. Ylang-ylang is now the central hero in the first perfume in history that matches its fragrant reputation. In recent years, the quality of ylang-ylang essence has deteriorated. The reason why no perfumer has dared to display the majesty of the flower until now lies in the difficulty in creating a perfume with an unpredictable ingredient.

… The tropical flower is known to be challenging and fickle. It needs cutting every week, at dawn, otherwise it will lose its scent. It then has to be distilled within two hours of being harvested. The distillation process, which is carried out locally, can take up to twenty hours, the first four of which produce the best quality, which is what diptyque uses.

............... diptyque is always keen to discover beautiful raw materials and is thrilled to be associated with Givaudan's sustainable development project that has been in progress for several years on Mohéli to prevent this exotic flower from dying out permanently. By helping to develop nurseries, diptyque is contributing in two ways to the continued supply and exceptional quality of this exotic flower: firstly, by growing plantations of ylang-ylang trees and secondly, by protecting the natural environment by supplying the firewood needed to distill the flowers without creating deforestation. This is the first time that Givaudan has formed a partnership with another brand on one of its projects. This strategy has its own impetus: two companies that share the same desire for the exotic and the authentic, paying special attention to the quality of essential oils. Cut and polished like a jewel, ylang-ylang can then be transported from the islands to the perfumer's palette.

EAU MOHELI, serves as a reminder of the flower's symbolic importance at this remote island in the Indian Ocean. Silhouettes of ylang-ylang in the woven bamboo baskets of the flower pickers are represented on the perfume boxes.
