Ambulatory Healthcare Services Rolls out Well Child Program to Enhance Competencies of Pediatric Staff

Abu Dhabi-UAE: 15 June, 2013 - A ‘Well Child' program is currently underway at the Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS) for healthcare providers across the network to upgrade their skills and bring them up to speed on advances in pediatric care.

Following the workshops hosted at Abu Dhabi and Al Ain that collectively drew the attendance of over 90 nurses, the program will be conducted for AHS physicians in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain on 15 and 22 June.

The ‘Well Child' program prioritizes the need to ensure that new borns and children up to six years of age receive recommended screening, while parents and/or guardians gain the necessary counseling to fulfill their role. The interactive sessions examine several critical topics that include assessment of child history, physical development of the child, feeding and sleeping patterns, as well as the monitoring of parent - child interaction to evaluate social and emotional behaviors.

Dr. Omar Al Jaberi – Chief Medical Officer, AHS, said: “At AHS, we are committed to ensuring that our staff is qualified and meets the standards and guidelines of the Health Authority Abu Dhabi. Towards this end, we believe it is highly important for our employees to regularly participate in initiatives that strengthen their performance and keep them informed on the latest developments in the healthcare sector. Moving forward, we are gearing up to conduct technical competency assessments for child nurses to evaluate their administration of tests on patients.”

In addition to reinforcing the importance of crucial child care practices such as vaccinations and breast feeding, the workshops of the Well Child program offer practical training for staff on measuring an infant's BMI percentile, as well as length, weight and head circumference. The session also offers crucial tips on techniques to observe children's skin, head, eyes and heart for ensuring their holistic wellbeing.
