Canon Middle East to host social media seminar in conjunction with ICDL in GCC

Leader in imaging solutions renews strategic partnership with International Computer Driving License Foundation

Dubai, 12 June, 2013: In a move that marks its commitment to enhancing the IT skills of the youth in the region, Canon Middle East, the leader in imaging solutions, will be hosting a seminar, in partnership with the ICDL GCC Foundation, highlighting the latter's guidelines for responsible use of Internet and smart phones in the GCC. The Foundation is the governing body and the certification authority of the International Computer Driving License program (ICDL) in the GCC.

Sharing Canon's own commitment to education and responsibility within the digitial space; parents, students and teachers from a selection of schools within the GEMS Education portfolio have been invited as exclusive guests to this event.

The seminar, which will take place on 17th June at The Westin Mina Seyahi Resort in Dubai, will be constructed around two sessions, running concurrently, one aimed at students the other at their parents. The aim of the sessions is to educate both groups on the risks inherent within use of social media and how to mitigate them. The premise for the seminar is that social media is a force for good, if it is used responsibly by all.

The social media seminar has been organised as part of Canon's renewed region-wide partnership with ICDL GCC Foundation, which Canon Middle East has supported for the fourth consecutive year. This initiative is in preparation for the upcoming “ICDL Summer Camp', which is set to run ICDL computer skills and social media courses across universities and centers in the GCC in July and August, 2013.

Anurag Agrawal, Managing Director, Canon Middle East, said: 'Our long-term strategic partnership with ICDL is part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the IT skills and cyber safety of youth in the region.”

“As a responsible corporate citizen, Canon Middle East believes in the importance of ensuring that the youth are fully aware of the power of Internet, and when used in a responsible manner, how it can enhance and protect lives as well as contribute to the creation of a knowledge-based society.”

Jamil Ezzo, Director General of ICDL GCC, said: “Social Media sites are increasingly posing more danger to our children than any other online source. With child exploitation, cyber bullying and Internet addiction on the rise, online safety awareness has become the duty of every individual and institution. Working with Canon to spread such awareness among students, parents and educators is part of our commitment to creating a safer cyberspace through responsible practices. We expect participation from students as well as parents to be overwhelming, as everyone recognizes the significance and widespread use of these technologies.”
