Abu Dhabi Quality & Conformity Council Marks World Metrology Day with Activities Themed ‘Measurements in Daily Life'

Abu Dhabi-UAE: 21 May, 2013 – Abu Dhabi Quality & Conformity Council (QCC) in collaboration with the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) marked the World Metrology Day on 20 May with an initiative themed ‘Measurements in Daily Life', which highlighted the science of metrology and its impact on people's lives.

Headed by His Excellency Hussain Salem Al Katheeri, Secretary General at QCC, the initiative engaged the participation of executives, department heads and employees of QCC, as well as sector specialists. The activities particularly emphasized the relevance of applying national measurement standards with high metrology properties.

Highlighting the fact that such practices would enable the UAE to increase its global competitiveness and trade, Dr Helal Humaid Al Kaabi, Executive Director of the Metrology Centre at QCC, outlined the role of the Metrology Center at QCC and elaborated on its services that contribute to the achievement of the Abu Dhabi' Economic Vision 2030.

QCC's Metrology Centre seeks to transfer and adopt international metrology standards and deliver quality experiences across Abu Dhabi. Towards this end, the center offers services on dimensions, mass, volume, flow, force, pressure, electricity, time, frequency and thermometry. The center also provides accreditation, advice and scientific cooperation to achieve high quality standards in the economy, technology and public health sector.

Dr. Helal AlKaabi, Executive Director at the Metrology Center, added that the theme for QCC's activities this year was particularly significant as it facilitated the understanding of measurement instruments used in daily life and the importance of calibration in safeguarding consumer health and safety.

As part of the event, Ameena Hasan AlBstaki, Head of Legal Metrology, Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA), delivered a talk on the accurate use of metrology principles. She also highlighted the role of meteorology in improving the standard of living and welfare of the community.

World Metrology Day is celebrated on 20 May to commemorate the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875 by 17 nations. The agreement laid the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and its industrial, commercial and societal application.
