18 April 2013 - Belhasa Driving Centre (BDC), the UAE's premier driving centre, has joined hands with the Dubai Police for today's launch (April 18, 2013) of ‘Child Safety Campaign 2013,' one of the country's largest safety awareness initiative that aims to help children increase their awareness on how to stay safe at home, school and in the company of their friends. Also joining BDC for the implementation of the campaign are partner companies like Babyshop, UHU, Faber Castell and NAFFCO. Present during the launch was Saif Belhasa, Chairman, Saif Belhasa Holding (SBH), top officials from Dubai Police and representatives from partner companies. The nationwide campaign, which will run from April 18 to April 25, 2013, is expected to reach out to more than 50 schools across the UAE and help school children between the ages of five to twelve learn more about keeping safe.
During the launch, BDC and Dubai Police also released a new colouring and activity book called ‘My Big Child Safety,' which has been conceptualized and developed in partnership with Adverk, a leading UAE-based advertising agency. The book will be distributed for free across all major UAE schools covered by the campaign and will also be available at all Babyshop outlets in Dubai. ‘My Big Child Safety' is a 58-page edutainment booklet for children containing a unified storyline combined with attractive and highly encouraging puzzles & games. The book will also feature important safety lessons on key topics like Calling 9-9-9, Staying Home Alone, Fire Safety, Getting to School Safely, Internet Safety, Bullying, Cyber Bullying, Staying Safe on the Roads, Seatbelts, Riding the Bus, Bicycle Safety, Emergency Safety and Parents and Guardians Safety.
Speaking at the press conference, Saif Belhasa, said, “As parents and guardians, it is our prime responsibility to maintain the safety and security of our children. Our new program, ‘Child Safety Campaign 2013,' aims to create awareness amongst children and enable them to recognize various safe and unsafe situations and how they should act across these instances. We would like to thank the Dubai Police and their top officers for their support in this new initiative. Working closely with local law enforcement agencies demonstrates our strong commitment towards helping the community become more aware of the need to promote safety, not only for our kids but for everyone else as well.”
Administrators coming from the campaign's partner schools have lauded the nationwide program and expressed their full support for the campaign and the distribution of the free colouring and activity book. The 'Child Safety Campaign 2013' program will reach out to more than 50,000 children via demonstrations of safety techniques, posters, brain storming puzzles, fun games and educational books. BDC has revealed that leading UAE schools like Gems Group, Our Own English High School, Gulf Indian high School, Madar International School (Al Ain), American Academy for Girls (Ras Al Khaimah), The Indian Academy, The Kindergarten Starters, The Winchester School, and Emirates English Speaking School have already joined up as partners for this timely campaign. In addition, schools interested in receiving free copies of the book can send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
'Babyshop has consistently demonstrated its commitment to child safety since the first edition of its awareness initiative in 2005,' said Ruban Shanmugarajah, General Manager, Babyshop-UAE. 'A recent study conducted by Babyshop and Neilson reveals that 43 per cent of parents do not use child car seats in the UAE. It also highlights the fact that 69 per cent of parents cite children falling from heights as the biggest cause for child safety concern. Throughout our awareness initiative, parents are actively engaged and supported in the pursuit of greater child safety. Being part of social responsibility engagements, like the 'My Big Child Safety' activity book, only stands to reiterate our dedication to increasing levels of parental awareness and education on child safety in the region.'
'We believe that children can be powerful agents of change, whereas when children are aware, we empower them. They can share what they have learned during our safety demos and bring the book home to show to their families. This campaign makes use of entertaining demonstrations / lectures and creatively designed instructional and interactive materials, which will help us communicate at the level that children understand. This way, we have better chances of getting the message across,' concluded Saif Belhasa.
