|Phoenix Medicines with Nayan Mongia Win Third Annual Gulf Super Sixes|
Teams Put on Fantastic Display of Cricket to Capitalise on the T5 Format of Quarterfinals, Semi-Finals and Finals
Dubai-UAE: 15 December 2012 – Phoenix Medicines mentored by international cricketing legend Nayan Mongia, emerged victorious during the finals of the third annual Gulf Super Sixes. The event was held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 14 December 2012 as they outperformed Seven Seas Strikers with Jonty Rhodes to win by four wickets in 4.2 overs.
The coin toss was won by Phoenix Medicines, who elected to bowl, where they put on an outstanding performance taking all six wickets from Seven Seas Strikers, forcing an all-out with 35 runs in 4.2 overs.
In addition to capturing the coveted Gulf Super Sixes trophy, Phoenix Medicines was presented a cheque for AED 25,000 from the organisers Crayons Communications, and sponsors, Gulf Oil and Landmark Group. Furthermore, Emax rewarded Phoenix Medicines with an additional cheque of AED 4,000 for their resilient performance during the tournament.
Rohan Mustafa from Phoenix Medicines was highlighted for his exceptional efforts and awarded the title of ‘Player of the Tournament', averaging 46.50 runs per game during the tournament.
Nayan Mongia, Former Player for the Indian International Cricket Team, said: “Any tournament you play, a win is a win. It always gives you a lot of satisfaction, pleasure and pride. The players of my team are not professional but amateurs and winning for them is great, and potentially life changing. The standard of play was very good. The cricket was simply beautiful. The batting and bowling were very tough and the fielding standards were simply top class and I really enjoyed playing in this tournament.”
Ghulam Sahier from Seven Seas Strikers put on an exceptional performance earning the most runs, with 15 during the finals, however it was not enough to help his team secure the win.

Gulam Shaier from Seven Seas Strikers was awarded ‘Best Batsman' of the Gulf Super Sixes as he averaged 62.5 runs during the course of the tournament, and the ‘Best Bowler' of the tournament was awarded to Salman Afziel. Each of these individuals was awarded AED 1,000 for their outstanding display of cricket.
Wasim Akram, Former Captain of the Pakistani International Cricket Team, said: “It was beautifully executed, the standard of fielding has impressed me a lot. I must say these young boys are working very hard in fielding. They were a lot of catches, which really impressed me, and the overall cricket standard has gone up. The sixes, the bowling, the fielding, everything has gotten better, so it is good to see that the Gulf Super Sixes as a tournament is improving and the overall standard of cricket in the UAE is improving which in the end is the main idea of the day.”
Gulf Super Sixes 2012 came to a close with local talent from the UAE showcasing their wide range of skills and versatility. In addition, coupled with a dance performance by 600 children from Delhi Private School Dubai and an LED light show performance, will surely raise the expectations of the enthusiastic cricket fans of the UAE for next year.
Prior to the final day of the Gulf Super Sixes, a gala dinner themed ‘Wasim Unplugged' was hosted at the Meydan Hotel in Dubai on 13 December 2012, to launch ‘Beyond the Boundary', a book documenting the progressive two year journey of the Gulf Super Sixes corporate cricket tournament.
In attendance included all the cricketing legends: Wasim Akram, Chaminda Vaas, Jonty Rhodes, Shaun Pollock, Mohammad Shahzad, Nayan Mongia, Ijaz Ahmed and Salil Ankola. Also in attendance were senior level officials that included: Mr. Mohamed Lokhandwala Honorary Secretary of Dubai Cricket Council, Mr. Sachin Mundhwa CEO of Landmark Group, and Mr. V. Ramesh Rao General Manager and CEO of Gulf Oil amongst others.
Organised by Crayons Communications in association with Gulf Oil and Landmark Group, the UAE's largest corporate cricket league is held under the auspices of the Dubai Sports Council and the Dubai Cricket Council.
