Centralised data collection system for post-natal care could help standardise breastfeeding practices in the UAE

Experts at upcoming breastfeeding and infant nutrition forum to discuss best-practice in post-natal care

Dubai, UAE:  Exclusive breastfeeding for six months followed by appropriate complementary feeding practices provides the key building block for child survival, growth and healthy development and it affords important health benefits to mothers who practice it. ‘Protecting Your Baby's Future: A Guide to Successful Breastfeeding' and ‘Tips and Advice on Weaning your Infant' are some of the topics discussed this year at the Philips AVENT Breastfeeding & Infant Nutrition Conference.

Cecile De Scally is a UAE-based Midwife Educator and will be speaking at the 5th Philips AVENT Breastfeeding & Infant Nutrition Conference for moms, ‘moms-to-be' and healthcare professionals in the UAE. The conferences will take place at the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel in Dubai on Saturday, 25 May 2013, and is organised in cooperation with Al Qadi Pharmacy and Est.

“In many hospitals in the UAE that focus on maternity care, women tend to be encouraged to breastfeed and are given antenatal advice. Up until the age of 6 months, breast milk or at least exclusively mild-fed diets are preferable. Should a mother have specific health issues which may affect her breast milk, and then her healthcare provider would be able to advise on other dietary requirements,” says Ms. De Scally.

Newborns naturally develop their digestive system further within the first month of their lives; however some may experience colic which causes distress to both the infant and the mother.

According to Ms. De Scally, “Colic is a very broad subject and I do not treat colic as a diagnosis but as a symptom of another underlying problem such as reflux or lactose overload. However, if colic is diagnosed, there are a steps the mother can take including watching what you are eating; move around as colicky babies respond well to movement; consider probiotics.”

As with many countries in this region, figures for breastfeeding rates are difficult to obtain due to the lack of centralised data collection systems. Many of the midwife educators and anti-natal consultants agree that data collection and studies within the UAE would extremely useful to understand how breastfeeding and weaning practices develop on a region level.

Philips AVENT will also run an afternoon session aimed at healthcare professionals and will offer presentations on the latest research and developments in breastfeeding and nutrition from across the world. This year, topics to be discussed include the role of nutrition in long term health and the importance of breast milk in neonatology intensive care.

“At Philips, we work closely with key stakeholders in the industry to understand the challenges faced by mothers and support the implementation of best practices to ensure a mother has the services, tools and knowledge she needs to give her baby the best possible start in life,” said says Ozlem Fidanci, Vice President and General Manager, Philips Consumer Lifestyle, Middle East, Turkey and Africa. “By bringing together leading specialists, we aim to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise to positively impact the level of care available to mothers and improve both mother and baby's quality of life.”
