Ambulatory Healthcare Services' Salem to Return with Comic Books and 15 New Exciting Episodes for Children

Abu Dhabi-UAE: 08 May, 2013 – Ambulatory Healthcare Services (AHS), a part of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), today announced the second season of the ‘Salem' series, the AHS mascot to educate children and parents on health, will be aired this Ramadan on Abu Dhabi Al Oula and Abu Dhabi Al Emarat TV channels.

AHS will also release two interactive Salem comic books this month featuring stories, activities and puzzles on dental hygiene and sports. More than 60,000 copies of the comic books will be distributed to school children in grades one to five across 112 public schools, during AHS community events, and at AHS centers and SEHA facilities in Abu Dhabi.

Salem is a young Emirati boy who is keen to learn and live a balanced life. The character was introduced to the community during Ramadan 2012 to promote health and shed light on essential topics amongst children and their families. The first season of the series last year gained high viewership and Salem quickly established himself as a role model among young audiences.

This year's 15-episode series will tackle issues on dangers of energy drinks, how to maintain healthy weight, as well as problems related to asthma, diabetes, chicken pox and lice in children. The upcoming episodes will particularly aim to promote empathy towards children with special needs and raise awareness on ways to cultivate respect among classmates, gain positive attitude, handle peer pressure and emotional abuse and learning to say no to wrong actions. The episodes will also highlight the importance of balanced meals with anti-oxidants, self-confidence in a personality, effective means of communication, regular vaccinations, wearing appropriate attire while playing sports to avoid injuries and ensuring a safe environment in the kitchen.

Mohamed Hawas Al Sadeed, Acting Chief Executive Officer, AHS, said: “We are pleased with the impact that Salem has had on children during his first year. Salem was conceptualized to appeal to children and make available a ready source of guidance and information on day-to-day life, particularly personal healthcare and hygiene. Going forward, we have planned a comprehensive calendar of activities around Salem for 2013 that will include interactions at schools and social events for the benefit of children, parents and the community at large.”

Speaking about the comic book, Al Sadeed added: “Children's fascination for comic books is well known and our recent research further validated this fact. Adapting Salem into a comic story is undoubtedly a compelling approach to promoting reading amongst children. Our tactic to incorporate educational content in the book will simultaneously communicate the importance of health and fitness to young readers.”

In 2012, 14 short episodes of less than two minutes each were produced and aired on Abu Dhabi Al Oula, Abu Dhabi Al Emarat and Sama Dubai TV in Ramadan. The topics were chosen on the basis of the comprehensive medical report for schools, highlighting the most common issues children face in the emirate. The themes included promoting physical exercise and safety at home, consequences of fast food and ways to adopt healthy eating habits, why breakfast is an essential meal and vitamin D and iron are important to the body, dangers of passive smoking, explanation on the comprehensive school screening, how to respond to bullying at school, causes of food poisoning, as well as the importance of oral, dental and personal hygiene.

AHS is a unique outpatient care concept from SEHA that seeks to offer easy access to primary and specialist patient care through its comprehensive laboratory and modern diagnostic facilities. The network's offering includes ambulatory care centers, school health services, disease prevention and screening centers, as well as mobile clinic solutions across Abu Dhabi.
