Airport Facilities Management Get A Green Makeover

Environmental solutions get integrated into airports of the future

Dubai, May 22, 2012: Airports are an integral part of national and global transport infrastructure, and the aviation industry needs to plan for its future development with a view to minimizing the key challenges like improving turnaround times, cutting emissions and enhancing safety, an aviation expert said during a seminar organized on the sidelines of the Airport Show which runs until Thursday.

Addressing the inaugural session of the Innovations Seminars, Mr. Edward Christie, Aviation Divisional Manager for Middle East and North Africa at the Lugano, Switzerland-based Cavotec, unveiled the new E3 Gate system – focused on environment, ergonomics and economy, which he said had been conceptualized by working closely with customers and industry bodies in order to develop a fully-integrated gate concept that is energy-efficient, reduces fuel costs, and minimises the use of auxiliary power units.

Cavotec has offices in the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar which are witnessing massive airports expansion and development to meet the growing passenger and cargo traffic demands.

The concept he noted, improves operational efficiency by providing ground services (400Hz - PCAir - blue water - potable water - sewage - Air Start) via underground pits.

A Visual Docking Guidance System (VGDS) is central to the E3 Gate System and once integrated would provide Flight Management of System Data to enable semi-automation of ground operations, making them safer.

Mr. Christie said that especially given the high temperatures in the UAE and region, implementing the E3 Gate System was much needed to increase the energy efficiency, reduce airport congestion, reduce or even eliminate APUs (auxilliary power units) and GSE vehicles, and lead to a more hassle-free travel experience for the passengers and airport staff.

He said Cavotec works closely with the airlines, airports, ground service suppliers and industry organisations to develop long-term solutions that deliver long-term benefits for all the industry stakeholders. For example, Cavotec engineers worked closely with A-380 manufacturer, Airbus, to ensure the optimal performance of its PCAir system that is capable of cooling these and other large aircraft quickly, efficiently and cost effectively - even in especially warm conditions common to the Middle East and elsewhere.

Through the implementation of its technologies in key airport projects across the Middle East region, Cavotec has allowed terminals to deal with the challenges of mounting passenger and aircraft traffic in terms of energy efficiency, cost reduction and ecological sustainability with faster turnaround times.

Over the past 10 years, the company has worked on prestigious regional projects in various capacities - as designer, supplier, contractor and manufacturer. Cavotec continues with projects of global significance in the GCC region, Jordan and other markets. Crucially, as a comprehensive systems integrator, Cavotec provides a single point of contact for customers, with the E3 Gate System being developed to cater to increasingly rigorous performance standards set out by airports, airlines, aircraft manufacturers and aviation authorities, he said.
