Alexander Kristoff did the team jersey proud with a powerful sprint into the wind that earned him a respectable second place finish.
The race unfolded as expected with a breakaway forming after 22kms and being allowed to stretch its lead to 2:20” before gradually being reeled in. Dubai, UAE, July 16, 2018: It was a brutal day of racing for UAE Team Emirates as they battled through Stage 9, a 156.5km route from Arras Citadelle to Roubaix with over 22 kilometres of cobbles to contend with. It was a stage fraught with crashes, but the team rode courageously and no casualties were taken on the pave.
GC Contender Dan Martin, who had sustained injuries in Stage 8, was able to stay safe inside the peloton, well protected by the team during the early parts of the race. As the riders began to split up along the road, Martin was carefully chaperoned to the front of the race by Oliviero Troia and finally delivered to the line with the main bunch after nearly three and half hours of chaotic racing on sections of road known as the ‘hell in the north’. After dropping down the GC table in ......read more
Dubai, UAE, July 15, 2018: After yesterday’s stage, it was a day of more flat roads, this time in Normandy, as UAE Team Emirates took on Stage 8 of the Tour de France – a relatively short 181km route from Dreux to Amiens. It was another day made for the sprinters, with the peloton setting off at a pedestrian pace for the first half of the race. The stage looked to be a straight forward affair for the team until misfortune struck with 16kms to go and Dan Martin was involved in a crash that put him two minutes behind the lead riders. UAE Teams Emirates’ domestiques put in a valiant effort to help Martin close the gap and catch the front group, but with so little distance left of the race - and a number of teams pushing hard to catch the breakaway - it was always going to be a big ask. After giving it everything over ......read more
Dubai, UAE, July 14, 2018: Today, Dan Martin earned the second Tour de France stage win of his career and in doing so became the first ever UAE Team Emirates rider to claim the coveted prize. The Irishman, who finished sixth in yesterday’s race, has looked strong in the saddle all week and had highlighted this stage as one of his main goals for the Tour. The team protected Martin well throughout the 181km route from Brest to Mur de Bretagne allowing him to match all the attacks and accelerations in the final kilometres of the race. On the final climb to the line, Martin timed his own attack to perfection and, as the gradient ramped up to 12%, he animated the race by powering away from the peloton and holding off the chasers to take UAE Team Emirates’ first stage win of this year Tour de ......read more
Dubai, UAE, July 12, 2018: Today UAE Team Emirates took on a race of two halves as they tackled Stage five of the Tour – a 204.5km course from Lorient to Quimper that began as a pan flat coastal course, before heading inland towards a series of short and tough climbs on highly technical Breton roads, which suited Dan Martin’s style of riding.
Once again, the team worked well within the peloton, protecting Martin and avoiding a number of crashes along the route. As the race unfolded the terrain began to favour the figure of Dan Martin who came to the front of the pack and – in the last few kilometres – started to up his tempo, going toe-to-toe with the Tour’s fast men. The final run in took the riders into an uphill sprint which Martin contested well, narrowly missing out on fifth ......read more
