Doha hosts the climax of the Longines Global Champions Tour 2014
Doha hosts the climax of the Longines Global Champions Tour 2014

Doha (Qatar) / Saint-Imier (Switzerland), 18 November 2014 – The world class Al Shaqab Equestrian Center in Doha hosted the 14th and final stage of the Longines Global Champions Tour 2014 from 13 - 15 November. The best riders in the world met to try to win not only the competitions of this ultimate leg but also the entire 2014 series. On Saturday, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson on Casall Ask celebrated a great victory at the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Doha, while Scott Brash was declared winner of the Longines Global Champions Tour 2014.

To invite the best horse riders to compete in the exceptional surroundings of the most beautiful cities around the world: that's the heart of the Longines Global Champions Tour. In 2013, Longines and this prestigious show jumping trial series concluded a long-term partnership. The Swiss watch brand has also become the Official Partner and Timekeeper for the Longines Global Champions Tour, thus opening up a new fascinating chapter in the history of equestrian sport. This agreement illustrates the seriousness of Longines' dedication to five-star outdoor show jumping events and perfectly represents the values and traditions shared by both parties.

In 2014, the series stopped in the center of some of the largest cities in the world, in particular Shanghai, Paris and London. The Longines Global Champions Tour constituted thirteen events between April and September before the grand final in Doha in November. The season started at Antwerp, a completely new destination for the Tour. At the heart of the “diamond city”, the competitions were located in a unique and magical place: the quays at the port of Antwerp against the backdrop of the majestic dockside cranes which symbolise the rich commercial heritage of the city. For the second stage, the Tour went to Spain, Madrid, then onto Hamburg in Germany. After the stage in Shanghai – which was the first five-star competition on Chinese ground – the competitions in Cannes and Monaco were all about glamour. For the seventh competition for the 2014 Tour, the horse riders competed on the Champ-de-Mars in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. This stage was followed by a competition at Estoril in Portugal and then at Chantilly, the European capital of the horse. The Longines Global Champions Tour then returned to its roots, to the Netherlands, in Valkenswaard. The competitions continued in Great Britain with a stage in the heart of London at Horse Guards Parade Ground, in Switzerland on the banks of Lake Geneva at Lausanne, and finally at Vienna in Austria for the last competition before the grand final. The final took place this weekend at Doha, Qatar, in the impressive Al Shaqab equestrian complex.

On Saturday 15 November 2014, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson on Casall Ask won the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Doha, one of the highlights of this stage. He therefore received an elegant Longines watch.

As the Doha leg marked the end of the season, the results obtained by the riders enabled the establishment of the final 2014 overall Longines Global Champions Tour Ranking classification. Scott Brash (UK) was declared winner of the Longines Global Champions Tour 2014, while Rolf-Göran Bengtsson (Sweden) arrived second and Ludger Beerbaum (Germany) third. To honour their successes, all three received distinguished Longines watches from the hands of Mr. Charles Villoz, Vice President of Longines.

Longines’ passion for equestrian sport dates back to 1878, when it produced a chronograph engraved with a jockey and his mount. Seen on the racetracks as early as 1881 and extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, this model enabled its user to time performances to the seconds. In addition, the brand partnered with a show jumping event for the first time in 1912. Today Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports includes show-jumping, flat racing and endurance competitions.
