Leading Regional Projects Recognised At Inaugural Light Middle East Awards 2013

Leading lighting design projects from across the region were recognised recently at the first ever Light Middle East awards. The awards set out to recognise projects and companies that have shown outstanding performance and achievement in key areas of the

Agostina Renna, CEO for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at GE Lighting gave the key note address. The nominations received were judged by an enthusiastic jury of high profile industry professionals who combined considerable knowledge with a careful understanding of the aims and intentions of the Awards.

“We all know that Dubai and the surrounding countries offer a wealth of potential and opportunity in many fields, and it is no different for the lighting industry. It is also no secret that many of the surrounding markets can be difficult to penetrate or do business in.  And this is where Light Middle East, driven by the expertise of the Light +
Building brand, can step in to help,” said Michael Dehn, Group
Exhibitions Director at Epoc Messe Frankfurt, organiser of the awards. “After really listening to local market requirements and
specific requests from some of our key clients it was clear that the industry wanted an injection of pace and a platform, aside from the exhibition grounds themselves, to truly showcase its worth. And so the Light Middle East Awards were born.”

The first award was received by Tanas Khoury, the CEO and Senior Lighting Designer of Light Concept in Abu Dhabi for their work on Princess Tower. The latest lighting technologies make the top of the tower resemble a crown, emphasizing the architectural beauty of the building. The Award was presented to Khoury by Murray Cameron, the Regional Manager for the Middle East at ERCO Lighting.

The winner of the Sustainable Lighting Project of the Year Award was DP World, Jebel Ali – Terminal 1. The award was presented by Paulo Guzzini, the Middle East General Manager and Vice President of FEE-MAG Group and iGuzzini. The airport terminal remained operational throughout the installation process and the new system
provided a cost-effective environmentally responsible solution that addressed all of DP World's challenges. On accepting the award on behalf of DP World, Saeed Abdulaziz said: “We were very happy to work with Musco Lighting. They changed more than 1200 fixtures at DP World which saved us more than 60% electricity and really
improved the safety in DP World and reduced maintenance costs.”

The Lighting for Public Building Award went to the State Mosque of Qatar as the judges deemed it to deliver excellence in both natural and artificial illumination – light and surface, light and texture, light and colour and most importantly, light and human activity. Accepting the award from Ditemarr Stack, the International Sales Director at category sponsor Trilux was John Nell from The Lighting Architects. The grand scale of the building and architectural minimal design concept was what impressed the judges.

Brian Yang, the General Manager of LG Commercial Business presented the Residential Lighting Project Award to Nehme
Moujaess, Partner and Managing Director for Terraverde who collected the award on behalf of winners – Emirates Hills Villas. The judges were excited about how user friendly the lights are to the home owners – connected to the home automation systems and a low voltage network.

Next up was Chris Rimmer, Head of International Sales for ACDC who presented the Lighting for a Hotel Project Award to Alessandro Ayanian, Partner at Neolight for their work on St. Regis Saadiyat
Island, Abu Dhabi. Claiming a double award, the project also won the best Exterior Lighting for a Hotel Project which was presented to Alessandro by Andrea Bolelli the General Manager for Linea Light GCC. The judges were stunned by the lighting design that reflects the area and surroundings of this new island retreat.

Finally, because it was such a close running, two different projects were awarded the Retail Lighting Project of the Year. The Change Initiative was deemed a contender because it fulfils the LEED Platinum status for energy-conscious and sustainable design and construction, by using the latest lamp and lighting control technologies which reduced energy consumption considerably. It is now the most sustainable building in the world. George Bou Mitri from platinum sponsor GE Lighting presented the award to Rolf Hulsbech from Delta Lighting Solutions.

Furthermore, Maeim Noorim, the Senior MEP Project Manager for Al Futtaim Group Real Estate was also awarded for the work on Dubai Festival City. The judges were wowed by Dubai Festival City's approach to sustainable development, where low energy LED lighting is one of the latest technologies embraced by the mall to deliver a positive change for its customers, staff and community.

The Light Middle East Awards were supported by Platinum Sponsor GE Lighting, Silver Sponsor Osram and Category Sponsors acdc, Erco, iGuzzini, Trilux, Linea Light and LG. Supporting Partner for the awards was the Society of Engineers. The judging panel consisted of 14 industry experts, namely: Barry Hannaford, dpa lighting consultants, Florence Lam, Arup, Marin Valentine, Ahmed Abdulla Al Salami, Dubai Municipality, Dr. Robert Reid, American University of Sharjah, Robert Honeywill, MBLD, Ziad Fattouh, Delta Lighting Solution, Dr. Abdulla Ismail, Rochester Institute of Technology, Maged Farouck Hanna, Society of Engineers, Shaun O'Mahoney, KEO Consultants, Simon Nummy, Atkins, Eng.
