Every year, diptyque brightens up Christmas with the introduction of its holiday collection. This winter, diptyque invites you to suspend time and go on a fragrant journey to the heart of the Orient and the Tales of the Arabian nights.
The heritage of the weave
Long before its iconic candles and scents came into being, the diptyque store at 34 Boulevard Saint Germain resembled a curiosity shop. A visionary space created by Christiane Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet and Yves Coueslant, three friends from art school. Passionate about interior design, the trio designed, produced and sold furnishing fabrics in elegant prints during the early ‘60s. A taste for graphic design led them to travel in search of unique objects such as the sublime Kilim rugs. Hand-embroidered by nomadic artisans, Kilims are immediately recognisable by their geometric variations. A maze of perfectly organised triangles and diamonds, with slight irregularities that make them extremely valuable. The minute artwork appealed strongly to the three designers, who adored its craftsmanship.
Inspired by this legendary collection of Kilim rugs, diptyque has devised three unique designs for Winter 2012. A variation of gold, emerald and peridot, a ruby print with a gold veneer, and a range of blues inspired by a night under the stars.
Three graphic prints interweave triangles and diamonds in the style of anOriental rug, but the magic really comes to life when you light the candles inside the decorated glass. The flame begins to dance and reflect each coloured nuance, while the scented smoke rings tell us their stories of far-off lands…
Golden Fir To celebrate the season's festivities, the fir tree, a symbol of Christmas, will be dressed in gold for Winter 2012. This unusual fragrance pays tribute to the most famous conifer in the world. The cold, almost icy scents of the traditional fir needles are accentuated with a gorgeous green essence of Iranian galbanum, Eucalyptus camphor and piquant Siberian pine, are combined with a splash of the aromatic essence of Moroccan absinthe, a nod to the shades of emerald which adorn the glass of the candle. The warmth of golden triangles then fuses with the green, conjuring up an image of a forest of spruce trees edged with cedars and patchouli leaves. Finally, essence of Canadian fir balsam breathes vibrancy into the scent. Balmy, warm and comforting, it evokes the gentle side of Christmas.
Available in a 190 gram photophore decorated in three shades of emerald, with a gold veneer. The small 70 gram candle comes in a “malachite” and gold shade with a case that is identical to the larger size candle.
Amber Oud Inspired by the Tales of the Arabian Nights, this perfume exudes the genuine scent of Oud wood, the precious, and earthy essence that is burned at places of worship. Fashioned like a precious stone, spiced with unique essences, and warmed by resins and balms, it plunges us into an Eastern reverie. From the first seconds, the combination of the spices is impactful: saffron, the astonishing freshness of ginger, the delicious flavour of nutmeg, piquant cinnamon and sparkling black pepper. The accord of Oud wood gently takes its place in the core note. Accompanied by cedar, patchouli, white pear and absinthe, it disperses subtly and elegantly throughout the room. The journey continues around an amber accord, containing vanilla, tonka bean, rockrose essence and Somalian incense. A concentrate of sacred fragrances to soothe the senses.
Available in a 190 gram photophore decorated in three shades of red and matte gold. The small70 gram candle is decorated in a ruby and gold shade with a case that is identical to the largersize candle.
OlibanSought after by collectors and adored by perfume lovers, the Oliban candle returns this winter, housed by a vessel that was inspired by a night blue Kilim rug. It recalls images of a sapphire-infused sky as well as a soft twilight where you expect to see Kings emerging, laden with treasure: gold, myrrh and frankincense. An eponymous tribute to the most mystical material in perfumery: olibanum – from the Latin olibanum and the Greek libanos – the other name for frankincense. Italian lemon essence and elemi resin mix with notes of aldehyde, followed by waves of Somalian incense, which fuse with myrrh and Javan vetiver. The base note contains Peruvian balms and benzoin, which envelop the olibanum with a benevolent aura. A scent which instantly transports us to the heart of the Tales of the Arabian nights.
Available only in a 190 gram photophore decorated in a variation of night blue, violet and matte gold.
