Dirhami financial literacy stand proves a hit with 3700 visitors in ten days
  • UAE national team and Al Wahda FC player, Hamdan Al Kamaly, surprise visitors at the stand
  • 2,970 visitors entered the interactive maze and interacted with Dr. Dirhami mascot

18 November 2013 – Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The Dirhami Program's exhibition stand at Marina Mall Abu Dhabi, organized by the Abu Dhabi Council for Economic Development (ADCED), has attracted 3,700 visitors in ten days. The exhibition stand is part of the Dirhami Program for Financial Literacy, which is aimed at creating financial awareness and educating community members about financial issues related to managing their funds and savings. It was launched in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI) and in collaboration with Abu Dhabi Sports Council (ADSC). 

The exhibition stand, which was designed as an interactive maze, posed questions to visitors modelled on hypothetical financial scenarios. The visitors were challenged to enter a series of passages to reach the end of the maze successfully, or end up in a simulated jail trap. The creative maze attracted 2,970 visitors, who interacted with Dr. Dirhami's mascot to obtain knowledge on personal financial management, aimed at enabling them to make sound financial decisions, and promoting rationalized spending and budget planning. To their surprise and delight, visitors have had the chance to meet with Hamdan al Kamaly, UAE National Team and Al Wahda FC player.

In addition, visitors also participated in signing pledges for the 'pledge palm tree' to make better financial decisions, through saving more each month or reducing outgoing expenses for instance. 730 pledges were made during the ten-day exhibition period. More importantly, the creative stand also attracted younger visitors, who participated in the colouring corner's activities, and received goodies bags containing Dirhami-branded moneyboxes to encourage them towards saving.

In this regard, H.E. Fahad Saeed Al Raqbani, ADCED's Director General, stated: 'The UAE is vulnerable to an escalating debt problem. Dirhami seeks to educate the local population through practical hands-on information helping them manage their finances properly. We are very pleased to see an increased number of visitors this year. We would like to use this opportunity to extend our gratitude to our strategic stakeholder, the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI), for partnering with ADCED to raise financial awareness amongst Abu Dhabi residents and to provide them with all the required resources and information to make sound financial decisions, both in their personal and professional lives.'

Commenting on the success of the stand, Dima Al Bawardi, Executive Director of the Corporate Communication Division at ADCED, said: 'The exhibition stand at Marina Mall enabled us to directly communicate with people of all ages and backgrounds. Witnessing visitors' commitment towards embracing Dirhami's values indicates that Abu Dhabi residents are ready to manage their finances wisely and make sound financial decisions with respect to spending, saving, and planning their budgets. The aim of the Dirhami Initiative is to raise financial awareness among Abu Dhabi residents and provide them with the necessary skills to attain high levels of personal financial well-being and avoid facing problems due to unwise financial decisions. The success of the stand shows we are on the right track and we plan to build on this success.”

Stressing the importance of educating young children about the dangers of excessive spending and debts, Hamdan Al Kamaly, Al Wahda FC player and Dirhami's brand ambassador, said: 'It is very easy for young children to grow up thinking that they can buy anything they want to with a swipe of a card. This way of thinking becomes habitual in their adult life and debt becomes a vicious cycle that is hard to break free from. There exists a culture of financing debt with more debt, which becomes a serious issue. I am supporting the Dirhami financial literacy campaign to raise awareness about sensible financial management including budgeting, spending and saving.'
